Florida is bracing itself for Hurricane Matthew today.
I did a few errands this morning, breakfast with a friend at Panera and hurricane shopping at Trader Joe’s, which I was surprised to find pretty quiet and well stocked with food and beverage.
As I encountered people doing the same, I noticed they seemed ready to make eye contact and flash an anxious smile at a stranger.
There’s a collective anxiety that happens during an event like this that naturally makes people want to connect with others for the sake of comfort. Even if the other pair of eyes has behind them the same anxiety, there is comfort in knowing you’re not alone.
Just as the animals know when trouble is coming weather-wise I think we humans know it on an instinctual level too. It’s lizard brain stuff. Or maybe it’s just the change in atmospheric conditions.
Here in Florida we have a cool creature called the Gopher Tortoise. It creates tunnels that can be 40 feet long and 9 feet deep. Apparently, other animals of the appropriate size will seek refuge in these tunnels during something like a hurricane.
I wonder if the Gopher Tortoise feels put out by this, or, if he welcomes the other animals in, offers them a reassuring smile, water, and a granola bar?
Anyway, I wish everyone affected by this storm safety and comfort. Find your version of a Gopher Tortoise tunnel and hunker down with people you love. ♥
