The following is an excerpt from Adam's forthcoming book, Clarity For Solos, which is being released on November 15, 2016 (National Entrepreneurs' Day). It's available now for preorder here on Amazon.com.
My grandfather’s military funeral made a deep impression on me—I was moved by the trumpets that played Taps and the guns that saluted his thirty years of service. What I remember the most, however, are these words from his eulogy.
As the Air Force chaplain said, "Life is like a pinball machine. We're always moving around in this world, bumping up against others. And with each bump, we touch someone. At that moment we have an important choice to make. How do we intend to affect the person we have touched?”
I want to affect people as positively as my grandfather did, so I put in the effort every day. Do I have a perfect record? Hell no. Daily challenges make it seem like it's me against the world, and it’s easy to rush right past people. It’s easy to forget that each day, when I make contact with people, my actions affect not only them, but the people they interact with as well.
I keep coming back to the idea that how I treat others and how I respond to them is my choice. I try to keep in mind that I’m not the only one getting knocked around by life, so I try to be kinder to each person I touch. It doesn't matter if it's a family member, the mailman, or the grocery store clerk. I believe we can change the world—at least our small corner of it—with every positive interaction.
